Q: Can a 1500 Silverado 2 wheel drive handle 7000 pounds of boat on the road and ramp?
I have a 2005 1500 Silverado with the factory tow package and am boat shopping now. I found a boat I like but with engine, full tank of gas, and misc items in the boat it will be pushing 7000 pounds. I can of course look up what the official trailering rating is, but I prefer voices of experience.

A: Okay, reality check here: Chances are that, NO, you cannot safely or legally tow that much weight without overloading your truck.
Here’s why:
“1 Maximum trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a BASE vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver. The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow.”
Your max tow rating varies depending on what cab you have…regular, extended, crew, and what bed length you have.
So let’s say you have the one that’s rated for 7700lbs. Okay, that’s for the most base model you can get, plus a 150lb driver. Any weight you add to the truck itself takes away from the max trailer weight. Are you more than 150lbs? Anything over comes off your trailer max. Full tank of gas? Yep, add 6lbs per gallon and subtract from your trailer total.
Taking anyone to the lake with you? Subtract their weights. Cooler with ice and drinks? Gear? Options on the truck over what comes standard? Sunroof? Sliding rear window? Running boards? Bigger tires? Bed cap?
Yep, all of that takes away from the truck’s payload, and the trailer tow rating.

You cannot exceed any of these three numbers: GVWR, GCVWR, and Max Trailer Capacity.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the max your truck is allowed to weigh, fully loaded.
Look in the driver’s door on the sticker and it’ll tell you how much that is. Curb weight on a 2wd runs from 4225 to 4986lbs for non-HD models. Again, that’s on a base model. Driver, Passengers, cargo, gas, tongue weight…all add to that weight. GVWR runs from 6100-6800lbs. Weigh yours as it sits, and you’ll know how much payload capacity you have left to go.

Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating is the max that truck and trailer are allowed to weigh. This is the one that’s going to get you, most likely. It’s either 12000 or 13000, again, depending on what exact truck you have.
So add your 7000lb trailer to even the most base-model truck’s curb weight at 4225 (and that truck doesn’t truly even exist in the real world) and you’re at 11,225lbs with no passengers, no driver, no full tank of gas, and no cargo, and not one single option on the truck.

So the moral of this story is, no truck can REALLY tow what it’s rated to tow by the factory if you do all the math. There are TONS of caveats and footnotes on all tow ratings, and if you read them, you’ll realize that factory tow ratings are bogus sales gimmicks.
Most professionals like myself recommend you don’t exceed 85% of the max recommended tow rating.

Can your truck physically pull this load? Yes. Will you be miserable doing so? Absolutely.
I personally have a 04 Z71 Suburban and pull a 22ft boat with it, and I wouldn’t go any bigger at all with this truck. And my Sub has at least the same tow rating as your truck, but my boat is nowhere near 7k lbs.

You need a bigger truck.

Q: how much higher does a silverado with a z71 package sit than a regular 2wd?
i have a 2000 chevy silverado that is 2wd and i was wondering whats the difference in height and etc. with mine a silverado with the z71 package.

A: the z71 sits about 2.5 inches higherif it has factory suspesion and tires. the 2wd sits lower in the nose but has a tighter turn radius

Q: my 2002 chevy silverado makes a knocking noise when i first start it up after it has been sitting over night?
my 2002 chevy silverado makes a knocking noise when i first start it up after it has been sitting for about 4 hours. The knocking comes from the bottom of the motor and only lasts for about 15 seconds.

A: The first things to check are which oil filter and weight of oil you’re using. An oil filter made by someone else, even a good company, may not be quite right for your vehicle. If, for example, it doesn’t have an anti-drain-back valve, your oil passages could be empty after sitting a while.

Check the 8th character of your VIN # on the front of the drivers side of the dash, by looking through the windshield. The proper AC/Delco filters for your truck are as follows; W=PF47, V, T, or U=PF59, G=PF454.

As far as what weight of oil you are using, GM recommends 5W-30 weight for most circumstances. 10W-30 is OK if temp is always above 0 degrees F. If temp drops below -20 degrees F, Synthetic 5W-30 or 0W-30 is OK. Heavier weight (higher numbers) oils are not recommended.

Of course, these recommendations are for newer, low mileage vehicles. If you have say 100K miles or more, you may want to go one weight heavier. Many people also advise against switching to synthetic oil for higher mileage engines. Many people have their own preferences as to what brand. I like Castrol best, and BMW actually recommends it in their owners manuals.

Q: How will putting tahoe rims and tires on a silverado affect the performance?
i have a 2004 silverado and it needs new tires but i know someone that wants to sell his stock rims with barley used tires on them from a 2004 tahoe. i know that the tire size on the silverado are 265 70r17 but dont know the tahoes. will puting these on the silverado affect the performance in anyway?

A: The Tahoe may be running a 245 tire, which is only 2cm narrower, and a hair shorter. It is no where near enough difference to require you to have the speedometer corrected; the difference will be ~1mph at 60mph.

The difference in performance because of tire size will be so small that you wont notice it. You will notice a difference in ride or handling because of a different brand tire or different tire tread.

The size difference WILL NOT have any effect on your antilock brake system. The only time that it would is when you run multiple sizes of tires at the same time (system sees different tires turning at different speeds). Since all 4 tires will be the same size, the computer knows no different (system sees all tires turning at same speed), and all operation will be normal.

Q: What size factory speakers come in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado single cab truck?
What size factory speakers come in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado single cab truck? I have blown my speakers and want to buy some new ones to replace them. I can’t find my book that came with the truck and have been unable to find the info online. I just need to know what size they are. I am guessing to sets of 4X6 speakers but am not sure. Can anyone find the specs online?

A: check www.crutchfield.com if you go to car speakers and select your truck it will say what fits and where.

Q: Trying to change my head lights from the 1989 silverado duel lights to the 1994 and up style?
I am wanting to put the newer grill in my 89 silverado with euro lights. I am trying to find out what all I will have to change out as for as plugs or the light mounts in order to do it before I tear it all apart. Any help would be appreciated.

A: more than likely you have to change everything from the coresupport forward . grill, headlights, cornerlights, bumper, airdam, then you have to change out the plugs on the harness for the headlights and cornerlights, check out stylinconcepts.com and you can get the whole kit to do everything to update the front end of your truck

Q: why is my 1993 silverado front suspension wearing front tires?
I have a 1993 silverado with 370000 miles. My front tires are wearing out on the inside. The front tires wiggle. I think that I need to replace the tie rod end, lower ball joint and upper ball joint. Let me know if i have to replace more parts. I think they have negative camber.
What parts do I need?

A: With that many miles, you may need to replace much more than that.

Q: How many miles can I expect out of a Chevy Silverado before having to spend money on repairs?
It is a 2002 Silverado 1500, Black Z71 4×4 with 148k miles on it. It is $7,500

How many miles can i expect to get to before i have to start replacing stuff and having to spend serious money repairing it? Thanks!
okay well still just with the description and the price does it sound like a good deal?

A: You can expect to spend money at any moment when you’re looking at a car with almost 150,000 miles. Impossible to predict.

Q: What years of Chevy Trucks are interchangeable with a 1991 Silverado 1500?
I’ve got a 1991 Silverado 1500. I need to replace the front grille, bumber, tailgate a door and a fender. What years of Chevy Trucks are interchangeable for these items?

A: 88-98

Q: How can I make my Silverado get more horsepower?
I have a 1999 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3 Liter Engine. Its the 323. I am planning on putting a 77 Series K&N Intake in it but I want to know if there are other things I can do to it without putting in a new engine or a big turbo. Something that isn’t too much but will definitely make a difference. If you have any ideas guys I sure would appreciate it. Thanks!

A: You have some options. Check out this link here:

http://www.rpmoutlet.com/gmsuvmaccat.htm#1

You can get headers for your truck, as well as dual exhaust, and high performance mufflers.

Also, check into Synthetic Motor oil, like Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. Depending on your budget, you could possibly put in a more aggressive camshaft into your engine. If you choose to do that, get the computer reprogrammed to the specs of the new cam.

I would say that the easiest and possibly the most affordable option would be to install headers, duals, and Flowmasters, in addition to the K&N cold air intake/filter. All those things combined will give you about 30-40 more HP over stock.

Also, use high quality spark plug wires, and check into an MSD ignition.

Good luck with your Truck!

Q: What causes my 98 chevy silverado to shake with my 20″ wheels?
I put some 20″ inch wheels on my 98 silverado but it shakes bad when driving. I had wheels rotated and balanced and alignments so what do you think is the problem?

A: when you had your alignment done was it by a knowledgeable technician because if they set it back within stock tolerance it will vibrate with 20″ wheels since the oversize wheels change SAI Radius and camber contact angle with a set of 20’s i recommend the camber to be set at 0.2 degrees and the caster at -0.5 degrees with a 0.10 total toe this should correct the problem and good luck

Q: How long does a 1998 Silverado stock transmission usaully last?
I want to know how long or how many miles does it take for an orginal transmission on a 1998 c1500 silverado to go bad. it has never had any work on it. just how long does it take until it might need repair?

A: It is all in how the truck/trans was and is treated. If the truck was used to tow or was driven hard, the sooner the failure. Routine servicing of the trans will make it last longer.

Q: 1994 silverado leaking gas from the top of the tank?
Now i have delbt with cars and trucks for a few years now. But my truck has kinda baffled me. I have a 1994 silverado 4.3 v6 5speed. It is just a junk winter truck so i dont got to drive my corvette in the winter. Anyways 5 months ago i had all new fuel lines tank and fuel pump put into this piece of junk. So last week i start smelling gas. After review when i run the truck it seems to be leaking gas from the top of the tank. Fuel pump and the seals along with the lines seems fine. But its leaking on top of the tank when the truck is running. I dont realy feel like taking that tank down again. Any suggestions what this could be and how i could fix this? Thank you in advance

A: if it is leaking when the truck is running it is uaually in the lines or at the top connections on the sending unit the tank will leak all of the time but the lines will leak when running and under pressure usually the pressure line going to the filter

Q: How do I fix the gas pedal on my 1994 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 so it isnt stiff when i start to accelerate?
I have a 1994 Silverado z71 with a 5.7 v8 and when I first start to accelerate the gas pedal is really stiff and hard to push and what happens is it gets past the stiff part and I end up launching the car as if in the start of a race. This stiffness is only the first half inch or so, the rest is normal. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this annoying problem?

A: Your throttle cable has a kink in.I had the exact same problem with my full size blazer. It was almost like the gas peddle was an on/off switch. Just go to the auto parts store and get you a new one and it is pretty easy to replace.
