Q: Toyota 4Runner?
What do you people think of a Toyota 4Runner? good car? known to cause problems? expensive to keep? and any other info that is helpful.
used********
A: The 4Runner is one of the better SUVs that you can buy. Its one of the few SUVs that is hard to find used. Thats because people dont like to part with them. They get better gas mileage than most other SUVs in their class but most of all they last forever. My 1997 Toyota 4Runner has over 200,000 miles on it and drives very well. I can expect this to go for at least another 100,000 miles as it shows no signs of dying anytime soon. Im getting 20 mpg in my 4Runner, but I do mostly highway driving. Dont believe other rating of 20mpg unless they are based on the new standards. Im getting 20mpg and I go 65-80 miles per hour all the time, so its not because I drive super slow (And this model was only rated 19mph highway). The fact that Im getting mileage thats above the EPA rating (the old EPA rating at that) with a vehicle that has over 200,000 miles on it is a testament to how nice this car is. Except for an accident it has never been in the shop expect for basic maintenance.
I once pulled up to a guy that had the same model/color 4Runner I had to brag that I had 200,000 miles in my 4Runner only to find out that he was beating me with 250,000 miles.
If you’re asking because you plan on buying one then have a mechanic check the car out to make sure that its in good condition and enjoy, although Id rather go with a smaller CAR with todays gas prices, unless you actually need to drive an SUV.
Almost forgot, this is not expensive to maintain. (at least not any more expensive than other SUVs) You pay extra for oil changes due to the V6 engine that uses 6quarts oil. Basic maintenance, which Ive been a little slack on is prob just about average for most cars. Its repairs that kills you. Luckily, if you take car of this car (oil change, spark plugs, filters, ect) then it will take care of you.
Hope this helps
Q: Toyota 4Runner?
Hi I really want a 4Runner when I can drive but what do you think of it? Is it a GAS MONSTER? Farely good? I have friends whos parents have them I think they are cool but is there any cons or likes???
A: It is a good choice if you like to drive a truck, as opposed to a car. It has a truck suspension.
Pros – They will last forever if you take care of them, they are capable of off-roading, and Stability Control is standard on all models.
Cons – The only realy complaint i have heard is the gas mileage average of about 16mpg.
Q: What engines will fit a 1995 Toyota 4runner to give me more horse power?
I have a 1995 toyota 4runner. I blew the head gasket and for the price to replace the head gasket I found for a little more money I can put in a new engine. I know I’m going to need a new transmission to suit a different engine as well as a new rearend. What 3 liter engines are out there that would make a suitable swap and give me more horse power?
A: I will need all of the numbers off the plate on the firewall to give you the correct advice as to how to fit the engine as the 1UZ-FE is the one to fit. Keeps it all Toyota, sounds nice, goes like you would not believe and uses less gas that the V6
Q: How can i boost a 91 toyota 4runner and make it lighter?
So my cousin has a toyota 4runner a 97 at that it has no power even in 4 wheel drive what mods can i do or something i work on cars i just dont know much about toyotas someone give me some hints if you have any plese also i want to know if there is a way to make it lighter thanks.
A: I was going to ask if it’s a 91 or 97. But it doesn’t matter.
A 4Runner is not a sports car. It has a lot of torque for pulling, but not for driving fast.
If you want something that drives fast, get a Sports car not an SUV.
Q: I have 2001 Toyota 4runner, i get a vibatation at around 70 miles an hour?
I have 2001 Toyota 4runner, i get a vibatation at around 70 miles an hour (on the passenger side). I have replaced the tires, and universal joints. The problems persist anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated .
A: Possible you have a drive shaft that has thrown a weight, Hard to tell from your description.
I would have you tires road force balanced, that will look for a hard spot on the tire, not everybody has one so ask first.
Q: What is wrong with my high beam toyota 4runner 2002 lights?
I have a Toyota 4Runner 2002 3.0TurboDiesel, and I have a problem with the headlights, the low beam head light works perfect, and the high beam head light works only when I pull the head light switch towards me (for a quick change of lights), but it does not work when I push the light switch forward (for a permanent change to high beam). The dealer tells me I have to change the turn signal/head light switch in the steering wheel, but they also say I have to change some control unit integrated circuits. They don’t seem to be sure what the problem is, so before buying some expensive integrated circuits, I wanted to hear some suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem and/or confirm the dealer diagnostics.
A: First, I am making an assumption that your diesel is wired the same as a gas one, as here in the US we don’t have the diesel. But the critical question is, “Does the truck have daytime running lights?” If no, the answer is simple: you need a headlight switch, which you canNOT disassemble to repair. It is one of the new modular ones that are all fastened together and can’t be fixed. However, if you DO have DRLs, the answer is MUCH more complicated because all inputs from the headlight switch go to one DRL relay (computer) and all functions are controlled from there. No doubt the dealer hedged in their answer because they know that the most likely answer is the switch, but want to leave room to cover themselves if that doesn’t fix it. Unfortunately, from studying the diagram, it would be really tricky to bypass the relay to test, and you would really have to know what you were doing. If it were in my shop, I would check for continuity across the switch in high beam ( pins 7 and 16, a violet wire and a white with black tracer wire). If none were there, I would put the switch in and hope for the best. I might would even see if I could find another vehicle and borrow the relay just to be safe, but I completely understand their hesitation. I tell you, until you try to diagnose these modern cars (which is what I do every day!) you just don’t understand what we are up against. In this specific case, if you follow the diagnostic tree for inoperative high beams in the diagnostic section of the Toyota Information System, it gives you location of the components and NO help on diagnosis.
Maybe you could cut the guys a break……
Hope this helps. God Bless!
Q: How often should a Toyota 4Runner have the following items performed?
I have the owners manual w/ manufactuer recommendations, but approximately and reasonably how often, under average conditions would a 1999 Toyota 4Runner need:
1) Brake fluid flush
2) Transmission fluid flush
3) Transfer case service
4) Power steering fluid flush
A: we recommend that all of those items be flushed or replaced (transfer case, rear differential and front differential… if you have a 4×4. if just 2 wheel drive, rear differential only)
flush it or replace it every 30K miles or 2 years. this is what we as techs do to our own cars and is what we recommend to our customers. i’m sure you won’t find this information in any owners manual.
Q: How do I fix my cigarette lighter on a 96 toyota 4runner?
My cigarette lighter went out in my 96 toyota 4runner. Is there a fuse I should change, or any typical solution/trouble shoot I can do?
Thanks.
A: should be a fuse for your lighter if the fuse checks out good then it is most likely the element.
You should be able to find a replacement cigarette lighter element at any auto parts store.
Q: What is wrong with the high beam lights of my toyota 4runner 2002?
I have a Toyota 4Runner 2002 3.0TurboDiesel, and I have a problem with the headlights, the low beam head light works perfect, and the high beam head light works only when I pull the head light switch towards me (for a quick change of lights), but it does not work when I push the light switch forward (for a permanent change to high beam). They don’t seem to be sure what the problem is, so before buying some expensive integrated circuits, I wanted to hear some suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem and/or confirm the dealer diagnostics.
A: You will end up changing the switch, this is a weak point in the lights!
Q: How do you access the audio system in a 1997 Toyota 4runner to replace with new system?
I have a 1997 Toyota 4runner and i would like to put a Alpine iDA-X001 in but i can’t figure out how to get into the dash to remove the old and put in the new. Also is there a problem with the system i picked that it wouldn’t fit in my car or would it work perfectly?
A: Here is a link of instructions with pictures.
Q: How do I set the timing for a Toyota 4runner?
I have a Toyota 4runner with the 3.0 V6. I need to set the timing. Is there a special way to set the timing? Besides with a timing light and adjust the Distributor. Do I need to unhook any of the hoses?
It is a 1992.
A: If you own a fairly new truck, then i believe you have no control with timing adjustments. It should be computer controlled.
good luck….

Q: Is a Toyota 4Runner better than a Ford Explorer for a first car?
I’m looking at first cars and I’m looking at:
2003 Toyota 4Runner Limited V6 with Nav, Leather, Sunroof with 86,000 miles for $13,900
or a
2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 with Leather,Sunroof with 76,000 miles for $11,980
Neither have a third row seat but I really like the Explorer but wouldn’t mind a 4Runner because they are nice. Any opinions?
A: Go with the 4Runner. Even is the Ford was maintained better, the 4Runner will give you less trouble and it’ll have a better resale value. It’s also guaranteed that the Ford will have transmission problems; I think it’s a law or something.
Q: Should I sell my 1997 toyota 4runner and buy a 1995 chevy van with 108000 less miles?
Hi!
I recently was given a 1997 toyota 4runner with 200,000 miles on it. A great deal came up where I can buy a 1995 g 20 coachman van (bed, interior lights, cd) in great condition with way less miles.
Its a six cylinder though and my toyota was four.
Should I go through with it?
The toyota can’t last much longer.
Thanks!
A: Most likely, such a switch would be very unwise.
Firstly, a Toyota at 200,000 miles may be less than halfway through its useful life, barring unusual abuse. AutoOnInfo.net’s Roster of 300,000+-Mile Vehicles has two 4Runners with more than 400,000 miles, one with more than 500,000 miles. Also, of vehicles on this roster, Toyota products account for 62% of the vehicles with more than 400,000 miles and 15 years.
Secondly, AutoOnInfo.net’s reliability and durability studies suggest that a typical Chevrolet vehicle at 7 years of age may be as troublesome to own as a typical Toyota vehicle at 34 years of age.
Thirdly, Consumer Reports’ accords the 1998 4-cylinder 4Runner its highest Reliability Verdict, and all of the reliability ratings for the individual categories are either Much Above Average or Above Average, save for one that is Average. (CR’s Reliability Verdicts go back only 10 model years.)
For a long list of additional reasons not to make such a switch, see this Yahoo best answer:

The Yahoo Answer database is a very valuable tool.
Q: Who around here drives a modified 98 toyota 4runner with extreme offroad capabilities?
I need to know where I can get accessories such as 3inch suspension lift, safari rack, rock sliders, hi-lift jack, etc…mainly offroad shizznit! 98 toyota 4runner.
A: Try out these 2 sites :
http://www.downeyoff-road.com/
http://www.4wheelparts.com/
If you are looking to make a rock crawler though, check out your local 4 X 4 clubs. A lot of those guy can fabricate stuff for you. But with only a 3 inch lift, I suspect you arenʻt doing any major off-roading.
